The Cutest City in the Florida Keys: Key West, USA

Key West was our last stop before returning to the Port of Miami with our cruise. After going to Coco Cay and Nassau in the Bahamas, I was not expecting much from Key West. Boy, was I wrong!

As soon as we got to Key West I realized that this small town with a population of about 25 thousand people in the Florida Keys is pure charm. Its wooden houses painted in pastel colours  with balconies and white fences, looking like a movie set, fascinated me. And not just me, since Key West also inspired big names like Ernest Hemingway, who wrote part of "A Farewell to Arms" at his residence - now a museum - in Key West.

Besides Hemingway's residence, the city is a cultural center offering several museums, such as the Art & Historical Society, an old customs building that has cultural, artistic and historical exhibitions not only inside but also outside, with statues that impress by their realistic details.

For those who enjoy life at the beach, the town also has the Shipwreck Museum - a visit that I personally recommend -. The Shipwreck Museum is located on Mallory Square, a famous little square where a Sunset Celebration is held every day, showing that Key West is not only cultural but also bohemian.

Also across the street from Mallory Square you can find the Key West Aquarium, one of the oldest in Florida. The admission to the aquarium includes guided tours that can be done in up to 2 days. In addition, depending on the time, visitors can feed the stingrays following instructions of aquarium professionals.

Another interesting spot for tourists is the Southernmost Point - an indication that Key West is located in one of the extremes of the United States, being closer to Cuba (about 150km away) than to Miami (about 260km away) -. To get to the Southernmost Point you can simply walk through the picturesque Key West or rent a bike.

To end your journey in this city that is the perfect combination of arts and a hippie lifestyle, a good idea is to try the Key Lime Pie, the most famous dessert from Key West.
