What to pack for a cruise

A few days ago I wrote a step-by-step on how to book a cruise. After you booked the cruise and are super excited for the trip you may ask yourself: so what should I pack for a cruise??

The answer is not that straight forward and depends on the time you’ll spent onboard, the destination/ season, the amount of luggage you’re allowed to bring with you and other factors. However, I’ve decided to write a few tips on what to pack for a summer cruise. In this post I divided my tips by categories and attached a check list that you can print before packing your bags. Enjoy your read and bon voyage!

What NOT to pack for a cruise
Most cruises don’t allow you to bring your own beverages onboard. Sometimes water and soft drinks are allowed in your luggage; however, very few cruises make this exception. Also keep in mind that basically the same rules that apply to a flight apply to a cruise: don’t pack anything toxic, weapons or any other objects that can cause a risk to you or other passengers.

Clothes and accessories
For a summer destination don’t forget to pack your bikinis, sandals and light clothes for the swimming pool area or for when you’re on shore. Towels are available in your cabin and swimming pool/ spa areas. Additionally, most cruises allow you to bring a towel with you outside of the ship as long as you return it when you’re back onboard. If you want to enjoy the gym area, don’t forget your sneakers and sporty clothes.

Cruises also have a formal evening where the use of appropriate clothing is mandatory in restaurants. Knee-high dresses or suits are good choices for the evening look.

Something that many people forget when travelling to warm places is to pack coats, jackets or blazers. On our cruise the AC was turned on to a temperature much lower than the temperature outside. Besides, in some nights the wind made external areas chilly as well. A pair of jeans is also a good idea!

Remember to also pack a beach bag with everything that you’ll need, such as sunscreen and books or magazines. Hats, caps and sunglasses also help to protect you from the sun.

Important tip: you will have to dispatch your suitcase just like you would on a flight, so it’s recommended that you have a change of clothes in your backpack / purse for the boarding day.

Electronic devices
Depending on how many days you are onboard, laptops are not always necessary and you can feel like you’re carrying weight/ worrying about the safety of your device for no reason since you’ll not even use it. Mobiles and cameras are a must but don’t forget to use both of them for photos and not relying on only one device. Another great gadget is a GoPro camera since you can take amazing photos and videos under water. Don’t forget to pack international adaptors as well.

Toiletries
The cruise line will provide shampoos and soaps in your cabin and in some cases other personal hygiene products such as conditioner, body lotion and tooth paste. Besides the basic items, pack sunscreen, hand sanitizer (some cruises have up to 3.000 people onboard using the same closed spaces!) and all medicaments you need. Hairdryers are also available in the cabin.

I hope you liked my tips!
